The original make up for The Leader in Captain America: Brave New World has been revealed, and it looks just like the classic comic
By George Marston

The Leader, the villain in Captain America: Brave New World, almost had a different appearance. The original makeup design, developed by Blue Whale Studios, resembled the character's classic comic book look with an enlarged cranium and green skin. However, the final design took inspiration from the Leader's more recent comic book appearances in Immortal Hulk, featuring exposed, wrinkly brains and more mutated features. The character, played by Tim Blake Nelson, was first introduced in 2008's The Incredible Hulk and has been a long-awaited villain in the MCU.

How I Got Exploited at My First Startup
How I Got Exploited at My First Startup

April 28, 2025 • By jakey_bakey

The article "How I Got Exploited At My First Startup" by Jacob Bartlett shares his personal experience of being exploited by a startup called Fixr. Fixr was a car repair marketplace that aimed to connect customers with qualified mechanics. Jacob, then a 24-year-old junior consultant, was approached by the startup's cofounder, Jimmy, to advise on mobile apps and put out fires. Despite initial enthusiasm, Jacob soon realized that the startup was poorly managed, with a dysfunctional team and unrealistic expectations. Jacob and his friend Gus, who was also brought on as a cofounder, worked tirelessly to develop the app, but their efforts were hindered by the team's lack of direction and infighting. The startup's financial model was flawed, and the team had failed to achieve any meaningful traction in three years. Despite this, Jacob and Gus were convinced to invest their time and energy into the project, with promises of equity and a potential payout. However, the startup ultimately failed to launch, and Jacob and Gus were left with nothing to show for their efforts. Jacob reflects on the experience, noting that being exploited by a startup is almost a rite of passage for young developers. He shares several red flags that he encountered during his time with Fixr, including a lack of transparency, unrealistic expectations, and poor communication. The article concludes with Jacob's advice to young developers, warning them to be cautious when joining a startup and to watch out for red flags such as poor management, lack of direction, and unrealistic expectations. He also notes that the experience, although painful, was valuable in teaching him important lessons about the startup world and helping him to grow as a developer.

SIMINGTON And WAX: America Needs A Smart Reindustrialization To Compete With China
SIMINGTON And WAX: America Needs A Smart Reindustrialization To Compete With China

April 28, 2025 • By Nathan Simington and Gavin Wax

The US needs a real industrial strategy to compete with China, focusing on advanced 5G infrastructure and smart manufacturing. China's approach has reshaped the global balance of power, with high-end automation and robotics driving its manufacturing strength. The US has fewer than 3,000 5G base stations, while China has over 700,000, with many being used for industrial purposes. The authors argue that the US must discard outdated regulations and invest in strategic infrastructure to stay competitive. They propose a new era of American abundance, grounded in infrastructure and capacity, and call for leadership to articulate must-have capabilities and develop incentives to deliver them. The future of global industry is being written, and the question is whether it will be written in Shenzhen or in America.

(PR) ASUSTOR Commits to Keeping NAS Devices Open and Unlocked

April 28, 2025 • By Nomad76

ASUSTOR has announced its commitment to keeping its NAS devices open and unlocked, allowing users to customize and use their devices as they see fit. This decision is in response to recent trends in the tech industry, where companies are increasingly locking down their devices to prevent users from using unauthorized software or peripherals. ASUSTOR believes that users should have the freedom to use their devices as they want, and that locking down devices can lead to disposability and anti-consumer practices. The company will continue to test and maintain compatibility with third-party components, but will not impose arbitrary restrictions on users. This move is seen as a positive step for consumers, who will have more flexibility and control over their NAS devices.

Europe has risky reliance on China for low-tech chips, auditors warn
Europe has risky reliance on China for low-tech chips, auditors warn

April 28, 2025 • By Pieter Haeck, Giovanna Coi

European Union auditors warned that the EU is heavily reliant on China for microchips, with one in three low-tech chips coming from China. The EU aims to produce 20% of the global value chain for microchips by 2030, but auditors say this goal is "nowhere close" to being met. The EU ran a €9.8 billion deficit with China on chips in 2024 and had deficits with other chipmaking hubs like Taiwan. The auditors warned that the gap between Europe and other regions will only widen, particularly as demand for low-tech chips remains high for the transition to sustainable technologies. The EU's independent auditor, the Court of Auditors, dismissed the 20% goal as "aspirational" and not grounded in reality. The European Commission acknowledged last year that the goal was far from attainable, projecting 11.7% by 2030. The issue of reducing dependencies on foreign technology has become more pressing due to geopolitical tensions.

This 1987 Prediction of What Technology Would Be Like Today Will Make You Gasp and Wheeze

April 28, 2025 • By Noor Al-Sibai

A 1987 BBC segment predicted what technology would be like today, with astonishingly accurate and hilariously misfired forecasts. The segment correctly predicted the use of weather-acclimating textiles, fingerprint passwords, smartwatches, and virtual reality glasses by 2024. Some predictions, such as a portable printer, were less accurate. However, the idea of a satellite-connected watch and virtual reality headset were prescient. The predictions were based on existing technology at the time, including personal digital assistants (PDAs) that were being developed in the late 1980s. The segment's host, Howard Stableford, showcased a chrome-and-lime-green watch that resembled a smartwatch and a VR headset similar to those available today. While some predictions were off, the segment's forecasts of smartwatches and virtual reality glasses were remarkably accurate.

Lavish gravesite confirms women’s power in ancient South America
Lavish gravesite confirms women’s power in ancient South America

April 28, 2025 • By Andrew Paul

A 5,000-year-old grave of an ancient woman has been discovered in Peru, providing insights into the Caral civilization, South America's oldest known civilization. The woman, found in the Áspero settlement, was buried with rich adornments, including colorful macaw feathers and a toucan beak, indicating a high societal standing. The discovery suggests that the Caral civilization, which flourished between 3000 and 1800 BCE, had a comparatively egalitarian culture, with women holding positions of power. This finding challenges the previous assumption that rulers were primarily men. The excavation of this woman, along with another similarly adorned woman found in 2016, known as the "Lady of the Four Tupus," reinforces the theory of a "leading female role" in Caral society. Further analysis of the remains and artifacts will help researchers better understand the woman's health, diet, and cause of death, as well as the cultural context surrounding her burial.

The Cartoon That Shows China’s Bet on Consumption
The Cartoon That Shows China’s Bet on Consumption

April 28, 2025 • By Selina Xu

The Chinese film "Ne Zha 2" has become the highest-grossing film in China, earning over $2 billion and surpassing Hollywood movies. This success comes at a critical time for China's economy, which is facing an escalating tariff war with the US. Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to boost consumer spending, and the film's success illustrates the potential for domestic consumption to drive growth. The movie's success, along with other Chinese cultural hits like the video game "Black Myth: Wukong," suggests a shift towards domestically produced and consumed content. This shift may mark a new chapter in the Chinese government's stance towards the private sector, including the entertainment industry, and could lead to increased spending and economic growth.
