The study involved 27 five-year-old children in Essex who participated in a computer-based experiment. The children were familiarized with two characters, one labeled "clever" and the other "not clever," and then heard audio clips featuring different UK accents. The results showed that the children associated a standard southern English accent with intelligence, which is consistent with the idea that children will grow up to view standard English as the "correct" form. Interestingly, the children also associated the Essex accent, their home accent, with intelligence, which contrasts with previous research that found negative attitudes towards the Essex accent among young adults. However, the children associated the Yorkshire accent with unintelligence, which corresponds with prevalent accent prejudice against northern accents in the UK. The study also found that children who had been exposed to a broader range of accents at home were more positive towards different accents overall and less likely to associate them with unintelligence. This suggests that exposure to accent variation may be key in tackling accent discrimination from a young age. The researchers conclude that children are not born with biases towards accents, but rather are socialized into believing them, and that early exposure to accent diversity can help mitigate accent discrimination.
